Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) has announced that PlayStation Vue, a cloud-based broadcast delivery service provided in the US market, will end on January 30, 2020. SIE did not comment on the reason for the termination of the service, but rumors recently circulated that it was selling the service, and some pointed out that the service was not generating revenue.
It is also known that Sony signed a multi-year contract with Disney in September for multiple channels such as ESPN for PlayStation View and Disney Plus. If so, it can be skewed to terminate the service only for profitability. However, looking at the industry atmosphere, the number of on-demand video services for Internet-based TV program delivery has increased and it has become difficult to acquire viewers, while there is a problem of gradually increasing service prices to maintain popular channels. The PlayStation View has also raised prices three times over the past four years.
In addition, users tend to prefer services on demand rather than watching existing cable TV channels live. However, services such as the PlayStation View and AT&T TV Now are not able to increase the number of subscribers, while Netflix and Amazon Prime Video are on the rise.
Of course, apps such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Hulu are available in the PlayStation Store. SIE says PlayStation users will continue to access movie and TV content through partnerships with the best entertainment apps. Related information can be found here .
