Audi has announced the Audi e-tron Sportback. This electric vehicle is equipped with a digital matrix LED headlight, which is said to be the first in the world among mass-produced vehicles, and enables safe driving by freely controlling the light shining on the road surface.
The digital matrix LED serves as a headlight with more than 1 million micro-mirrors in the headlight unit, plus its own light projection function like a projector. For example, if driving on a highway, it is possible to illuminate only the driving lane or when changing lanes, it is possible to simultaneously illuminate two lanes including the lane to be moved. In addition, if there are pedestrians on the side of the road, it is possible to urge the driver to be careful not to accidentally cross the road by continuously illuminating only those feet.
Driver assistance technologies are evolving, such as tracking them before using the radar to apply emergency brakes or stay in lane on the highway. However, it is now starting to expand its functionality to headlights. By using a function that illuminates only the lane using a digital matrix LED, the vehicle width in the middle of the light is indicated by an arrow symbol, which can help novice drivers in night driving. In addition, if there is a lane reduction due to construction in the direction of progress, the change of lane can be signaled with headlights. However, this function is only valid on straight highways and does not work on narrow general roads.
In addition, the digital matrix LED function cannot be used unless it is approved for use in traffic regulations depending on the country. The US also does not recognize the use of light other than high and low beams as headlights, so this function is illegal. Audi said it has not yet decided whether to install a digital matrix LED on the US model.
