Italian tire manufacturer PIRELLI has unveiled a Cyber Tire system using 5G communication from a tire manufacturer’s perspective.
This system analyzes the water condition on the road surface due to rain, etc., and sends it to the central server through 5G communication if there is danger information that causes the car to become out of control due to the sensor on the tire and car driving data. Similarly, low-latency 5G communication can be used to quickly send information to other vehicles entering the danger zone.
Tires are the only parts the car touches the road. Cyber tires are characterized by being able to directly collect road surface information. Pirelli explains that the sensor will be able to monitor not only wet conditions on the road, but also in future tire conditions and monitor information such as abnormal loads while driving.
Of course, cyber tire sensor information is used for automatic vehicle control or driving assistance systems, and can help improve safety, comfort, and significant performance. Pirelli announced Cyber Tires with companies such as Audi, Itardesign, KTH and Ericsson. It’s not clear when these tires will actually go on sale, but new technologies can improve both safety and car performance.
Pirelli is also the only company that supplies tires to the F1, the highest peak in motor sports. In F1, each team introduces sensors that measure tire pressure and temperature independently. This will change to a common sensor supplied by the FIA from 2021. This summer, a bid for a company to develop a common sensor was in progress, but Pirelli may also develop a sensor that responds to this, and the resulting technology may be introduced as a commercial product.
For reference, a sensor that measures the tire surface temperature is attached above the front wing of the F1 machine. Motorsports in general, including F1, act as a running laboratory, and the role of a place where various cutting-edge technologies are born remains the same as in the past.
