Netflix announced on November 25 (local time) that it has signed a lease agreement with the Paris Theater in New York, USA. It is intended to be used as an exclusive theater for holding events or screening of own films.
The Paris Theater is one of the oldest remaining theaters in New York. It is also the only single screen theater in New York with only one screen. This 111-year-old place was unfortunately closed in August, but it was re-used as a theater with this Netflix contract.
Since early November, Netflix has held a screening event for its own movie, Marriage Story, starring Scarlett Johansson and others at the Paris Theater. It is said that the event was a success and a lease was signed to save the historic theater.
In addition to the Paris Theater, Netflix is active in partnering with historic theaters. LA is also trying the same. Collaborating with historical theaters like this can not only gain support from movie fans, but also help strengthen relationships with Hollywood leaders.
Netflix has also produced films that have received high praise so far, but it has not been properly evaluated by Oscar officials because it has not been shown in theaters. Last year, Steven Spielberg said he should fight the Emmy, not the Oscars. Obtaining a dedicated theater like this time and long-term screening of the company’s work at the theater can also satisfy the Oscar conditions. Related information can be found here .
