Crimea has been a part of Ukraine since independence in 1991, but it is a place where Russia continues to claim that Russia has incorporated it in the wake of the Crimean crisis in 2014. Much of the international community supports Ukraine’s claim that Russia’s annexation of Crimea violates Ukraine’s constitution. However, according to foreign media, Apple is marking Crimea as Russian territory in its map app.

Apple is said to mark Crimea as Russian territory in two pre-installed map apps and weather apps. If you enter one of the Crimea place names (Simferopol) in the Weather app, the word Russia appears and it is classified as a land in the Crimea region of Russia. In the Maps app, the border with Ukraine is clearly marked with a red line, while the border with Russia does not exist.

The House of Representatives of the Russian Parliament is making a statement that Russia considers only the port city of Sevastopol to be another region, and the Apple Maps app shows the border between Sevastopol and other regions.

It is said that on iOS devices using the Russian version of the App Store, Crimea is marked as a territory of Russia with a map app or a weather app. In addition, Apple has been talking with the Russian side for several months after being criticized by the Russian House of Representatives that the labeling of the cream was incorrect.

Apple originally proposed marking Crimea as undefined land, not even Ukraine. However, it seems that Russia has argued that it is illegal under Russian law to mark Crimea as Ukrainian territory. Afterwards, an official from the Anti-Corruption Committee of the Russian Parliament said that the fact that the Crimea was marked as Russian territory through a map app or a weather app was evidence that Apple complies with the Russian Constitution. In addition, he explained that discussions with Apple were ended, saying that such a mark cannot be reversed.

In the case of Google Maps, which is widely used around the world, Crimea is not clearly documented in Russia or Ukraine. However, the place names for Crimea were written in Russian, not Ukrainian. Related information can be found here .
